The forever white mountain

The Tronador is an old volcano (it is said that it had its last eruption thousands of years ago) that gives the most striking color to the geography of San Carlos de Bariloche. Like an icon that stands out at more than 3000 meters above sea level, the mount has 6 glaciers (4 on the Argentine side, 2 on the Chilean side) that give the region a spectacular landscape. Through this terrain, of rock, snow and glaciers, one travels and ascends to the different summits. In this expedition, the objective is to try to reach Pico Argentino, one of the closest to the Otto Melling refuge.

Itinerary

Recommended: spend the night before in Bariloche, where the equipment will be checked by the guides.

Day 1: Transfer at 7 am from San Carlos de Bariloche to Pampa Linda, about 2:30 hours of travel. Entrance to the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Preparation of equipment and trekking to the Otto Meilling refuge. Important ascent of 5/6 hours with weight. Possibly there is snow in the final part of the trek; in those cases the guides will evaluate if snowshoes should be used. Overnight in the refuge. Preparation for the summit day.

Activity hours: 6 or 7

Day 2: Day of attempted summit of Pico Argentino. Between 12 and 14 hours of activity round trip. Glacier ascent and 50° slope climbing. Return to the shelter and overnight.

Hours of activity: 12 to 14

Day 3: This day, instead of going down the path that we have climbed, we will make the crossing that joins this refuge with the Agostino Rocca, in Paso de las Nubes, and that crosses the Alerce Glacier. Beautiful tour, also with glacier rope techniques. Arrival at the Rocca refuge and overnight in it, with bunk beds and bathroom-showers.

Activity hours: 6

Day 4: We will now descend through the valley of the Rio Frias, originating from the homonymous glacier. The route goes into the Andean Patagonian forest and ends at the small gendarmerie port of Lago Frias. There we will cross the lake with the small catamaran and, after 2 km of vehicular transfer to Puerto Blest, we will also sail but now through the Blest Arm of Lake Nahuel Huapi to Puerto Pañuelo (in front of the Llao Llao Hotel). Final transfer to the city center of San Carlos de Bariloche. End of the program and our services.

Activity hours: 6
